From the DCMS Twitter whatsit. Yeah that’s the story of the Olympics, making a fucking train arrive on time, not £9.3Billion down the toilet on sports venues. You couldn’t make this stuff up if you tried!

“One of the most flawed arguments gaining in prominence during these difficult times is that manufacturing can somehow re-emerge as an economic driver in the UK, bringing with it new jobs through an emboldened private sector. No one I know in manufacturing or business really believes this. On the other hand according to figures from the department of work and pensions, the arts council and other credible sources, the ‘creative’ service sector is flourishing. Two million jobs and £16.6bn in exports in 2007 - and growing exponentially. This work relies upon the likes of BBC, Channel 4, Foster and Partners, Saatchi, The White Cube and many others than span media, advertising, architecture, art, literature etc etc. Many success stories begin with Arts Council funding and other grant bodies, developing talent into revenue, revenue into jobs. Those jobs generate tourism, products and services that pay vast sums of taxes into treasury coffers. The creative sector in the UK makes an increasingly important and sizeable contribution to our economy. It beggars belief that Jeremy Hunt doesn’t seize the opportunity to ask for these successes to be recognised and better supported. This is the real state of our economy, supported through excellent and creative education and learning. Like most Conservative politicians Hunt instead is reaching for the scythe, to chop away what he considers unnecessary based on out-moded principles that are popular with entrenched Tory voters. If his actions echo his sentiments, he will show himself to be out of touch with economics, out of touch with the nature of employment, out of touch with the contribution of ‘culture’ in the UK. The conservatives liked to talk about change during the election, but in their few months in Government little actually seems to have changed since they were last in power. They are still a party with 20th Century principles, 20th Century policies and 20th Century rhetoric. If Cameron believes the future is the ‘big society’ he needs to get his government to understand and communicate the realities of 21st Century Britain, the complexities of the economics of culture and the true position of the UK in a globalised information age. Unfortunately, I don’t think he is up to the job.” —

Some commenting makes a lot of sense. ALl too often however it is buried among the noise.

“It seems counterintuitive, but for imagination-based companies to succeed in the long run, making money can’t be the focus.” —

A good mantra for the arts, not everything has to make money, nor should it be required to make money. Just because it makes money, doesn’t mean it’s any good either.

“That will be happening next year. That will be the moment when I use my electoral mandate to say to the BBC now, going forward for the next five years, these are what we think your priorities need to be and there are huge numbers of things that need to be changed at the BBC. They need to demonstrate the very constrained financial situation we are now in.” —

The DCMS minister illustrating that he doesn’t know what a mandate is. During the election more people voted for other parties that voted for the Conservatives, ergo, you don’t have a mandate. Got that? Is that clear? Would you like a five year old to explain it to you?

We don’t know wtf this thing is supposed to be but it is not surprising to see ACE’s fingerprints and Sadler’s Wells written all over it.

There is an unintentional comedic moment in the partners section of the site which describes Sadler’s Wells as the “Northern Hub”. All of the “hubs” are located in London.

Alan Budd: the end of Osborne's honeymoon | Larry Elliott | → guardian.co.uk

So the suspicion is that Budd is going quickly for another reason – namely, that his independence has been called into question by the shambolic way in which Osborne’s team handled the story, based on a Treasury leak, that the measures in the budget would cost 1.3m jobsacross the public and private sectors. The Treasury, to put it mildly, was not best pleased by this story and vowed to “trash” it when it broke in the Guardian last Tuesday, on the eve of David Cameron’s appearance at prime minister’s questions.

Edit FFS!

Can we make one small request to those that use the most excellent Flickr for sharing photos, would you please edit your damn pictures because photography is not a stream of consciousness, it’s a collection of moments you really want to remember and you really want other people to see.

The greatest photographers in the world may only take a few hundred truly stunning images in their lifetime, what makes you think you, with your iPhone, can bang away and put four fucking thousand pictures online that are worth seeing in the space of 12 months?

Stop polluting the internet!
